Classroom Page: Sixth Grade

Welcome to 6th Grade!

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year! It is a delight to be working with you and your child this year. I invite you to join in partnership with me in support of your child’s educational process. My goal, in the tradition of Catholic education, is to create an environment in which the children are encouraged to think, question, explore and reflect intellectually, emotionally and spiritually.

In order to strengthen their understanding of the day’s lessons, each student will be given homework. Please check the homework each day, not just to see if it is completed, but also to know what your child is learning and the degree to which she or he is grasping each concept and skill. As part of their homework each child is required to complete 20 minutes of reading each night. They will be given a reading log that is to be signed by a parent in order to verify the completion of the reading for that day.

Students will also be expected to work on the Accelerated Math website. The activities on this site are designed to reinforce learning in school, as well as provide opportunity for enhancement. Each student will be required to complete 32 objectives each quarter, but are welcome and encouraged to complete more than required. The website can be found under the “Quick Links” tab on the school website. If students do not have access to a computer or Internet at home, we will find a way to get access to them.

In order to maintain a safe and enriching environment in which to learn, I am implementing rules that induce positive and negative consequences. This will give students guidance in making good decisions about their behavior and thus, an opportunity to learn in a positive, nurturing environment.

Please be assured, my goal is to work with parents and families in ways that create a strong communication between the classroom and the home. We will have parent/teacher conferences after the end of the first quarter, but if you need to contact me at anytime throughout the year, please feel free to email me at asimpson@olssd.org or stop by the classroom before or after school.
